Seven things to do and see in Austria as Formula 1 races at the Red Bull Ring

The Styria region of Austria is known for its stunning landscape, with lush forests and tall mountains as well as spas and castles - combining renaissance, baroque and modern architecture.

Formula 1 races at the Red Bull Ring for 71 laps at this amazing racing circuit in the hills of Austria with several elevation changes, as well as lots of Red Bull and Max Verstappen fans in the stands.

Here, Travel News Blitz’s Ayla Vaughan explores seven things to do and see in Styria, Austria.

Schlossberg

The Schlossberg is a tree-clad hill and the site of a fortress in the centre of the city of Graz, Austria - the biggest city in the Styria region.

The hill sits at 473 metres (1,552 ft) above sea level and is now a public park as well as being site of several entertainment venues, cafés and restaurants.

Eggenberg Palace

Eggenberg Palace is a castle in Graz and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with stunning Baroque interiors, such as its many magnificent state rooms.

On the grounds is also a magical garden and park as well as priceless collections of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, which showcase the history of Styrian culture over the centuries.

Admont Abbey

Admont Abbey is an extensive monastery built in a Baroque style and is situated at the entrance to the Gesäuse National Park, with manicured gardens, historic buildings and contemporary architecture.

This religious site also hosts the world's largest monastery library and a museum that exhibits artefacts from the Middle Ages to the present day, all under one roof.

Watch the Austrian Grand Prix

Formula 1 races in Austria from June 27-29 at the Red Bull Ring, home of both of Red Bull’s F1 teams - Red Bull and Visa Cash App Racing Bulls.

This 4.318km track is known for having very few corners (only having 10) and its great racing with lots of overtakes and three DRS zones, allowing for some exciting action.

Skywalk Dachstein

Skywalk Dachstein is a stunning viewing platform overlooking an amazing scene, a 250 metre sheer rockface of the Hunerkogel (a mountain peak part of the Alps).

Visitors will be able to take a cable car to this peak and admire the views, or if they’re feeling brave cross a suspension bridge and enter the Ice Palace (a mystical world of ice and snow deep inside the Dachstein glacier).

There is also some local food to enjoy at the top of the mountain at the Glacier Restaurant, such as salad, cake, fondue, soup, stew, sausages, ice cream and many more.

Kunsthaus Graz

Known as the “Friendly Alien”, the Kunsthaus Graz is an architectural landmark of the city that showcases international contemporary art from the 1960s to present day.

The museum is an example of blob architecture with its exterior being made out of blue solar panels, showing its dual purpose and versatility.

Visitors can admire the many exhibitions displayed inside such as Freeing the Voices which explores sound and mainly human voices.

Lurgrotte Peggau

Lurgrotte Peggau is the largest cave in the Eastern Alps of Styria, Austria which dates back to the Paleolithic era (3.3 million - 11,700 years ago), although it was first scientifically explored by the Italian cave explorer Max Brunello in 1894.

People can complete a crossing of about 5 km (3.1 miles) in this long cave, with infrastructure such as bridges, walkways and lights to help guide you along your way whilst admiring the large calcium deposits, stalactites and stalagmites.

Since it is a show cave, there are displays inside in its largest gallery, such as the Big Dome or the Bear Grotto due to the cave bear bones that have been found within.
