Travel news: Five cities, beyond Paris, worth visiting in France - Lyon, Nice and more

Paris is undeniably France's most popular travel destination. It is known the world over for its romance, cultural significance and breathtaking monuments.

From la Tour Eiffel to the Arc de Triomphe, it’s not hard to see why Greater Paris attracted more than 37 million tourists in 2025.

But beyond the famed French capital, the country has many wonderful cities that should be on every keen traveller’s list.

Here, Travel News Blitz’s Renée Cottle highlights five of France’s travel-worthy cities.

Lyon

A must-see city for foodies, Lyon is widely celebrated as the gastronomy capital of the world!

Offering a relaxed peek into authentic French life, Lyon is a very strong contender for your next visit to France.

Explore the streets of Vieux Lyon, admire its Renaissance architecture and stop at a traditional bouchon restaurant to sample the city’s local specialities.

Bordeaux

Often referred to as “Little Paris”, Bordeaux has earned an international reputation for its world-renowned wines.

La Cité du Vin is the city’s wine museum and cultural centre and boasts an immersive, interactive journey through the history and culture of wine.

Visit a sustainable vineyard or explore the medieval village of Saint-Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage destination just outside the city.

Nice

“Nissa la Bella”, which translates to “Nice the Beautiful”, is the affectionate (and apt) name given to Nice.

The sun-drenched capital of the French Riviera is visited by around five million tourists every year and offers a unique blend of French and Italian influences, with colourful architecture, Mediterranean beaches and a charming Old Town filled with bustling markets, cafés and narrow cobbled streets.

Head up to Castle Hill for panoramic views over Nice and the sparkling Baie des Anges.

Lille

Situated near the Belgian border in the north of France, Lille is served by the Eurostar and is just around 90 minutes from London.

The first weekend in September is a great time to visit for shopping lovers, when the city hosts Europe’s largest open-air flea market, the Braderie de Lille.

Strasbourg

Strasbourg offers history and character, with canals winding through the houses of Petite France.

Visit during the festive season to experience the “Capital of Christmas”, when traditional markets, festive lights and stalls selling handcrafted gifts and seasonal treats bring the city to life.

Summary

From Lyon’s food scene to Nice’s Mediterranean coastline and Strasbourg’s Christmas markets, France has plenty to offer beyond its capital.

Whether you’re planning a weekend escape or a longer adventure, these five cities are well worth considering for your next French getaway.
