Travel guide: Where to go to turn your next marathon into an unforgettable trip

From a personal best to scenic landmarks, this guide from Travel News Blitz’s Harry Perdios will help you conquer more than just a holiday.

When travelling, some people want nothing more than relaxation. Soaking up the sun, listening to the waves crash on the shore, with a cooling cocktail in hand. Sounds like bliss… right?

Others, however, choose to run 26.2 miles, collecting blisters along the way whilst battling an existential crisis somewhere around mile 21.

If you are the kind of person who prefers running shoes to flip flops, or you want to add some unique flair to your holiday, this guide is for you.

These are the marathons that offer more than just salt-streaked skin.

They offer the opportunity to explore world-famous landmarks, unfamiliar streets and a holiday you’ll talk about long after the finish line.

History

Every marathon has a start line, and this one began a long time ago, not in a galaxy far, far away… Instead, it began in ancient Greece.

In the year 490 BC, Pheidippides, a war messenger, ran 25 miles from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to deliver urgent news.

Pheidippides, exhausted from his extreme means of transport, unfortunately died from exhaustion.

To commemorate his loyalty and willingness, the first-ever marathon was created at the 1896 Olympics.

Athens

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to run the race Pheidippides ran over 2,516 years ago, now is your chance.

Though slightly different, with ancient ruins buried under gyros shops, this route is not for the faint-hearted.

Known as one of the world’s most hilly marathons, the race travels past the Tomb of the Athenians, the Marathon tomb and concludes at the site of the first modern Olympic stadium.

A perfect experience for all you ancient Greek lovers.

If you do complete this race and need to find a way to gather your thoughts after those pesky hills, why not have a wander around the quiet streets of Anafiotika, beneath the Acropolis.

If you find yourself needing to sit down with sore legs, why not enjoy a rooftop cocktail from various locations across the city, whilst watching your medal glisten in one of the gorgeous sunsets Athens has to offer.

Berlin

If the appeal of hills doesn’t resonate with you, but you still want to take on the ultimate running challenge, then the Berlin marathon may be for you.

Known as one of Europe’s flattest courses, tickets for this event are available through a lottery system.

If you are one of the lucky individuals to be selected, you will pass iconic landmarks, including the Berlin Cathedral, Potsdamer Platz and a final victory lap through the Brandenburg Gate to the finish line.

Offering runners the most unique sightseeing experience.

Once the sense of exhaustion fades and pride kicks in, why not celebrate with a well-deserved beer in one of the many traditional bars across the city?

Beer prices range from £3-£5, giving you the chance to celebrate with gold around your neck and in your pint glass.

Sydney

Have you ever wanted to visit Australia?

Remember to pack your running gels, because the Sydney marathon is perfect for those wanting a taste of Aussie life.

Taking place on August 30, the downhill roads make this marathon worth it.

Finishing at the Sydney Opera House, soak in that laid-back Australian lifestyle, just what you need at mile 15.

Australian winters can’t match your speed. Enjoy the saunas at Bondi Icebergs, the perfect experience for a winter spa break, and to rest your weary post-race muscles.

With gorgeous 19-degree weather in August, unwind with a picnic. The perfect excuse to refuel, recharge, and soak up the peaceful atmosphere after race day.

Snowdonia

Don’t fancy a long-haul flight and fancy something closer to home?

Partake in the Snowdonia Trail Marathon Eryri, taking place on October 24.

Though slightly longer at 27 miles, the challenge offers runners spectacular views of Eryri National Park.

After your run, or shall I say mountain hike, soak in the beauty and relax in the bliss that Snowdonia has to offer.

Treat yourself with one of the many spas the area has to offer, a great excuse for that massage you deserve.

Whether you’re chasing a personal best or an excuse to see the world, marathon holidays prove you can truly do it all, even if you are wobbling the day after.
