Seven things to do and see in Newton as IndyCar races at Iowa Speedway

Newton is in Central Iowa with a population of 15,760 whose name came from John Newton, a Revolutionary War soldier.

IndyCar has a double header race at the Iowa Speedway for 275 laps at this oval circuit known as “The Fastest Short Track on the Planet”.

Here, Travel News Blitz’s Ayla Vaughan explores seven things to do and see in Newton.

Jasper County Historical Museum

The Jasper County Historical Museum comprises over 16,000 artefacts, shown in displays such as an 1865 barn, steam engine house and blacksmith shop.

Other exhibits include furnished Victorian era rooms, 1930s rooms, a general store, post office, barber shop and millinery shop.

Maytag Dairy Farm

Maytag Dairy Farm is known for its blue cheese, but they also manufacture other dairy products such as goats cheese, cheddar, swiss, gouda, manchego and many more.

Their cheese completes a tasty charcuterie board as they also sell their own honey, salami, prosciutto, jams and spreads.

Newton Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

The Newton Arboretum and Botanical Gardens are six acres of stunning landscapes located within Agnes Patterson Park.

On display are a rose bed, two woody shrub beds, a shade garden, a tulip bed, a butterfly garden, a water garden and a native prairie.

Watch the Grand Prix of Iowa

Iowa Speedway is a 0.875-mile oval track with variable banking and produces laps under 18 seconds, making the race last almost two hours.

Therefore, it is exceptionally demanding physically and mentally on drivers considering it is a double header with races on July 12 and 13, with Penske’s Josef Newgarden having won here an impressive six times.

Gezellig Brewing Co

Gezellig Brewing Co is a microbrewery and taproom, that makes and serves a variety of award-winning beer, lager, pilsners, IPAs, pale ales and more.

This makes it the perfect place to get a cold and refreshing drink to escape the summer heat in a beautiful, modern venue - with food trucks available outside as well.

Westwood Golf Course

If you’re looking to explore another sport, Westwood Golf Course is a serene, beautiful place to try your hand at golf - whether you’re an experienced player or a rookie.

Aside from the 18-hole course, it has a driving range, two practice greens and a brand new clubhouse (which includes a full service bar, lounge, kitchen, pro shop, golf simulators and more).

Capitol II Theatre

Capitol II Theatre is a small movie theatre that was built back in 1927 and offers current selections, such as Jurassic World Rebirth, F1 the Movie and How to Train Your Dragon.

So sit back and relax whilst snacking on some tasty popcorn or if you’re a bit hungrier you can eat a pretzel, deep dish mini pizza, mini doughnuts or nachos.
