Seven of the best things to see and do near the Harry Potter Bridge in Scotland

The Harry Potter Bridge, better known as the Glenfinnan Viaduct in the Scottish Highlands, is one of the franchise's most iconic and scenic filming locations.

With sweeping arches and incredible rolling scenery to match, it so effortlessly captures the Hogwarts magic.

Here, Travel News Blitz’s Sam Condy breaks down seven things to see and do when you make the trip.

Watch the Jacobite Steam Train

The main draw for Potter fans is catching sight of the Jacobite Steam Train as it crosses the viaduct.

Better known on screen as the Hogwarts Express, it runs daily in the summer months and is a spectacular sight as it chugs along the world-famous bridge.

A short hike takes you to the classic viewpoint overlooking the bridge.

This is where most of the famous photographs are taken, and it gives you the perfect angle to spectate the train in all its glory.

Ride the train

Widely considered as one of the world’s greatest railway journeys, the 84-mile round trip is a must-do when staying in the surrounding area.

Travelling from Fort William to the seaside town of Mallaig, the trip takes you through some of Scotland's most breathtaking scenery.

Visit the Glenfinnan Monument

At the head of Loch Shiel stands the Glenfinnan Monument, built in tribute to the Jacobite Rising of 1745.

Visitors can climb the monument for an epic view of the surrounding mountains and loch.

Explore Loch Shiel

Right beside the viaduct, Loch Shiel is one of Scotland’s most beautiful bodies of water.

There are plenty of walks for all ranges of hiking abilities.

A visit here during the summer months provides a true highland experience.

Go Hiking in the Highlands

The viaduct is surrounded by walking trails that wind through some of Scotland’s finest scenery.

Scotland is famous for its hiking, with over 270 munros, and there is no shortage in areas surrounding the viaduct.

Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak, sits just outside Fort William, and while it’s challenging, hiking to the top is an incredible achievement; the view from the top is perhaps the best in Britain.

Munro’s can be challenging, so make sure you pack the appropriate gear, plenty of water and lots of snacks.

Steall Waterfall

Also nearby to Fort William, the cascading waterfall is another breathtaking Harry Potter filming location.

Featured in The Goblet of Fire when Harry takes on the Hungarian Horntail dragon in the Triwizard Tournament, the falls bring the movie’s magic to life.

It’s around a forty-minute walk from the car park, but the reward at the end is more than worth the effort.

Discover Local Villages

Nearby Glenfinnan and the surrounding small villages offer cosy pubs, local inns, and a taste of Highland life.

The Glenfinnan Station Dining car provides a unique eating experience, with the cosy restaurant situated inside a retired railway cart.

Summary

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is more than just a film location - it’s a piece of history, a railway marvel, and the centrepiece to some of Scotland’s most breathtaking landscapes.

From watching the Hogwarts Express steam along to exploring lochs and monuments, a trip here is a magical experience for movie geeks and tourists alike.
