Beyond mining: Discover why Kitwe, Zambia, is worth exploring

When people think of Zambia, destinations such as Victoria Falls and South Luangwa National Park frequently come to mind, writes Travel News Blitz’s Tabitha Kongo.

However, nestled in the heart of the Copperbelt Province is Kitwe - a city that offers you a unique experience of the “kopala” culture and warm Zambian hospitality.

Kitwe is known to be the second largest city after Lusaka in terms of population size. It is also the third largest city when it comes to infrastructure development after Lusaka and Ndola.

Whether you are travelling for business, leisure, or simply cruising through Zambia past its tourist attractions, you are sure to be engulfed by the wealth of experiences that Kitwe has to offer.

Local markets

Kitwe has two large markets, Chisokone and Nakadori.

Chisokone

Chisokone market is one of Kitwe’s largest and busiest markets. It is located in the city centre.

As you step into the market, the atmosphere is filled with stalls that are closely packed together and vendors calling out what they are selling and prices to attract customers.

Vendors who do not have stalls lay a mat on the ground and place their goods there. You can find things such as clothes, vegetables, fish, fruits, detergents and other foodstuffs.

Music plays through the speakers, a large crowd moving from one stall to another, trying to find a vendor they can bargain with.

There is a mix of scents ranging from fresh produce, spices and street foods.

You will often hear “ba sister or ba cee” and “iseni mushite umusâlu” (come and buy some vegetables).

It’s normal to get lost as a first-time shopper at this market because the crowd can get very overwhelming. However, the vendors maintain relationships with their regular customers.

If you feel that something is too expensive, you can negotiate with the vendor to reduce the price. This is how the market life operates in Kitwe when having a proper interaction.

Nakadoli Market

Nakadoli is located in Chimwmemwe, one of Kitwe’s busiest townships.

This market is less crowded compared to Chisokone. If you want a less intense market experience, then Nakadoli is for you.

You will find vendors selling vegetables, grains and fruits.

Vendors are always friendly and engaging with their customers to have the best shopping experience.
