Seven things to do and see in Tokyo as Formula E visits this new city track

Japan’s capital Tokyo is a busy city that mixes the ultramodern and the traditional, from tall and bright skyscrapers to historic temples.

Formula E visits Tokyo for rounds 8 and 9 of the 2025 season, with home team Nissan hoping to win here in front of their fans.

Here, Travel News Blitz’s Ayla Vaughan explores seven things to do and see in Tokyo.

Hama Rikyu Gardens

This stunning park is next to Tokyo Bay and contains one of the most beautiful gardens in the city, making you feel as if you’re still in the city whilst simultaneously enjoying nature.

Hama Rikyu Gardens also has a large pond, and is laid out in the Edo-period style on the site of a 17th-century Shogun villa - allowing you to experience the contemporary architecture.

Imperial Palace

The current Imperial Palace was constructed in the same spot where Edo Castle used to stand, and is inhabited by the Emperor of Japan - His Majesty Naruhito.

Visitors are allowed to explore the gardens and see the palace from its moat, with the Kitanomaru Park hosting the Nippon Budokan (an indoor sporting arena and musical performance venue).

Dog Cafe Rio Akihabara

Japan is known for its animal cafes, from dogs to cats to bunnies, allowing you to have a drink and meal in adorable company.

At Dog Cafe Rio Akihabara, you can pet the dogs gently, give them treats and play with them - with small dog breeds such as dachshunds, pugs, chihuahuas and more.

Watch the Tokyo E-Prix

Formula E drives around the streets near Tokyo Bay - on May 17 and 18 - for the second time after the inaugural race here just a year ago.

The 20-turn, 2.585 km (1.606 mile) circuit was won by Maximilian Günther for Maserati MSG Racing in 2024, but Nissan’s Oliver Rowland will want to win to extend his championship lead.

Ginza

As one of the city’s top shopping districts, Ginza (meaning silver mint in Japanese) is packed with upmarket boutiques and ritzy cocktail and sushi bars.

However, if shopping is not your thing, you can enjoy traditional Japanese dance and drama at the landmark Kabuki-za theatre.

Tokyo National Museum

The Tokyo National Museum houses the largest collection of Japanese artefacts and artworks in the world, with over 100,000 pieces of history.

The museum features everything, such as sculptures, lacquerware, metalwork, ceramics, modern art, textiles, paintings, stone carvings and a gift shop - where you can buy something to remember your amazing trip.

Go Karting Tokyo Bay

The Bay Route Tour lasts 2 hours and is full of thrill and adrenaline, starting at the Kartzilla Facility, which is near the Tokyo Skytree.

The tour takes you through iconic landmarks such as Monzen Nakacho, Toyosu Fish Market, Ariake, Harumi, Kabukiza, Tokyo Station and then back to the Kartzilla Facility.

This go-karting experience will allow you to speed through the streets of Tokyo whilst dressed up as your favourite animated character, with a photo at the end to commemorate your adventure.
