If you’re thinking about taking some time out to travel, you might be unsure as to where you want to go.

Whether you want to work abroad, experience a new culture or hike in new landscapes, Travel News Blitz’s Atlas Scholes lists seven of the best countries to visit during a gap year.

Australia

A hotspot for young travellers, Australia is a prime location to visit on your gap year.

It's fairly straightforward to get your hands on a working holiday visa – if you’re looking to fund your time abroad on the fly, it’s easily doable.

A trip down under is definitely worth the cost of the flights – there’s an abundance of vibrant cities and unique wildlife to see.

Thailand

Budget-friendly backpacking, adventure, and culture are three great reasons why you should head to Thailand.

Whilst the initial costs of getting to Thailand may scare you off, the money you’ll save whilst you're there with cheap street food and budget-friendly accommodation makes this beautiful location easily accessible – it should definitely be on your list.

Japan

A wild mix of tradition and future, Japan is an absolute gem of a country that should be up for consideration when planning your time abroad.

Delicious cuisine, stunning scenery and quirky pop culture make The Land of the Rising Sun a wildly popular destination for solo travellers.

South Africa

If you’re looking to do some volunteering, South Africa may be somewhere to look into!

There are plenty of volunteering opportunities within South Africa, allowing you to really make a difference during your year out.

Alongside your volunteering, you will have the opportunity to explore some striking landscapes and meet some super-friendly people.

Canada

Canada can be a really great option for your year abroad, as you can earn some money, see popular destinations like the Niagara Falls and – if you are lucky – get a glimpse at the Northern Lights!

It’s also a country known for its safety amongst solo-travellers, and everyone is super friendly, so you may even pick up some French!

Spain

Spain can be a really good middle ground or home base if you’re looking to travel to multiple places.

Whilst Spain can offer you bustling cities, a multitude of different environments and some amazing tapas, it’s also a central hub to visit other places in Europe such as Germany, France and Portugal.

Maybe consider Spain as your starting point if you’re looking to do a tour of Europe.

Vietnam

And finally, Vietnam.

With a rich history and vibrant culture, Vietnam is perfect for solo travellers looking to not only save a bit of money but also truly experience what the rest of the world is like.

Its diversity in scenery leaves you breathless, and the atmosphere truly is one you will never forget.

Summary

In short, go everywhere you possibly can.

If you’re looking to work abroad, there are plenty of options, and you aren’t confined to just one country for your time away.

Use your time wisely – go see the world!
